Velketor drops clicky magic nuke and clicky summon sword items for mages also if poopsocking giants is your thing.

And Monster Summoning pets.

I just read about monster summoning on the wiki and don't really remember it from live - what is the advantage to having a local creature to aid you? Do they get special powers??

Its just an illusion I believe. Like if you used it in oasis, you would summon a pet with the illusion of Cazel

So is the monster a "type" of pet that has an illusion suited to the zone you're in?

You are correct. As far as I know, it's purely cosmetic
