I'm not a missionary. I'm not trying to convert anyone. For me, kindness and respect are gifts freely given and I expect no qid pro quo, although I do belief that kind of behavior ripples and echoes through the world and makes everything just a little bit nicer for everyone. The joy is in the giving, not in the anticipation of gifts received in return.

Quid pro quo is so abused, I think you mean do ut des.

After reading the formal definitions of both phrases, I don't think either really expresses what I was after--some kind of indebtedness for a past gift. A gift is a gift, not an obligation. I should have avoided the Latin and stand corrected.

"The Golden Rule"

It's hard to implement, especially in my life. Inevitably there are people who will do whatever / act however they please regardless of the positivity you try to instill into the world.

Agreed, and I am certainly far from perfect in its execution, but that doesn't mean I stop trying. I felt very disrespected by one of the officers of IB, but that doesn't make me feel proud of getting increasingly angry and eventually disrespecting him.

I'm not sure who to attribute this thought to; it's very old. It may be Lao Tzu or it may be the Buddha:

If someone hurts you and you get angry, does your wrath lessen the harm?

What about Treat others how they want to be treated. If I dress and act like a bum then I must want to be treated like a bum.

I don't feel diminished by having helped Raren even though his subsequent behavior caused me to choose not to associate with him.
Brace for philosophy. I think I understand your ideology here. Your concept of good is to promote growth in all living things so that they might be of some use later, or you promote growth because you think that your act of kindness (as you said before) would send small ripples that would lead to more kindness? would this be correct?

Precisely my point. Say I know a bum for 20 years and every day on the way to work he asks me for change. Am I obligated to give him money? I feel bad for the guy and I'd love to help him but money won't make him self sufficient.

Yeah, it's not any kind of altruism. I treat people the way I'd like to be treated.

He's mentally slow. You know how when you were 5, rubbing dirt in a girl's face because you had a crush on her? Yeah, he wants the cock.
