I think its like textbooks. The market is flooded, so you put out a new edition so people will have to purchase new books.

That being said, I played 2nd edition back in middle and high school, and I remember looking at the 3rd edition long after I stopped playing, and it looked retarded. Full-retard retarded.

2.5 was so massive, it was virtually unplayable. Which is what I loved about it.

I'd spend days making a character, get too drunk while playing and forget all about it. That's the sum of my D&D experience - I'd rather make a character than play one.

We played v.2 & 3. Character sheets, lots of books, dice, some figurines. Hi I loved painting those precious little things and keep my blue dragon in my kitchen window still.

Hubby & I actually met on the way to a D&D game [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] Mutual friend of ours picked me up then swung by to get him. He looked over his shoulder with a speculative gleam in his eye and he's been my DM ever since, lol. I'm the only cleric I know of that had a pet shoulder dragon [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I played a healer of course. Our parties varied in size from 4 to 12 people depending on who wanted to party. We had a friend who didn't play but was our bard and would sit in the background playing his guitar, lol. Another friend (RIP) who had a little man's complex, he always played a guy who's ride was an ogre and did the most outrageous chit creating more adventure on his own we could often handle.

I learned quickly don't ask for wishes, you'd get them instantly, behind every bush! But wording those wishes took FOREVER and he'd fork us every time. Fireballs in dungeons are bad. Approach water with caution. Stealing dice and lighters was acceptable. Leaving the table setup to play for weeks was the norm.

We've still got our books & dice tho we haven't played in years now, everyone scattered to the winds over the years. I miss the fun and companionship of those house parties, we had a blast.

Great thread!

Of course, it was really about collecting stacks of books and bags of dice. I kept mine (dozens of them, of course) in an old Crown Royal bag, and it's still kicking around the house, somewhere.

And maps - definitely all about the maps. A friend of mine (the DM in my playing adventures) had a mad talent for cartography, and was hand drawing professional caliber stuff for years.

Ahh, I'm getting all warm and glowwy - although that could be the expresso. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

WTF? Was there a memo that went out at some point? Why did we all do this?

I don't even think I've ever had Crown Royal but my old dice are still in a CR bag. I don't even know where it came from. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I played AD&D and basic starting way back, quit when @nd came out, came back for 3rd, and played LG and now LFR. I also play Pathfinder RPG.

It is all D&D.

I organize conventions in Florida, for campaign play.
