To address what you said though, carelessness is just a form of stupidity. If someone isn't careful enough to keep track of their belongings, who's fault is that but their own? How can any decent person sit here and argue otherwise? You're essentially saying that people should be expected to look after people who ARE CAPABLE of taking care of themselves but choose not to.

If the person who lost his/her found expected other people to find their phone for them, that might make your argument valid.
Someone taking someone that doesn't belong to them is something entirely different.

And the latter part in bold is a simplistic and incorrect take on human nature. There's a difference between rewarding stupidity and condemning people for it. Throwing the whole "survival of the fittest" (which is a misapplied concept anyway) thing into this doesn't make sense.

Yes it's the person's fault for leaving their phone. It's also the fault of the person taking who took the phone. Regardless of the carelessness of the person who left their phone the OP is still trash if he doesn't return the phone.
To reiterate: I'm not saying he's trash for not seeing the phone and making an effort to return it to the rightful owner. He's trash for taking something that doesn't belong to him and keeping it.
