If you use the "Search this Thread" tool you will note that Elethia did not post in that thread. At all.

What was that about poor memory?
I read your argument but I think it's rather dubious. Obviously no one can prove or disprove the existence of God; that much we can agree on. But at this point you start to fade into a wishy-washy 'well we all have our own opinions' kind of argument. There are plenty of people who believed in God for reasons they felt were rational ("Glub do rain dance. Rain come. Glub happy.") but in general if whatever method of thinking you use supports the existence of God, it would probably would not be considered rational.

That being said, I think there is an extremely strong evolutionary argument for being religious. Considering the extremely high level of religious belief on average, it seems quite reasonable that religion confers some sort of competitive advantage, even if we don't know what that is. As an example, Greek Orthodox Catholics fast something like 1 out of every 3 days every year. It turns out that this fasting is extremely healthy and primarily responsible for the Cretan studies which popularized the Mediterranean diet. Presumably there are other aspects of religion that are also beneficial. It's not trendy, but 'because my ancestors lived this way' really is a very reasonable answer.
