You don't need anything other than your starting sword to kill level 1 monsters (monsters that have white text when you right click on them). If you died, make sure you pick up your sword from your corpse. Also make sure it's equipped; it should be in your primary hand when you go to your inventory (I).
Also, I think you must be mistaken or playing on a different server; there's no such thing as a halfling paladin here. Do you mean dwarf?
