melee skills can't be raised in duels, and supposedly you get fewer skill ups from light blues than from dark blues or higher

I dont know about duels, but it worked on live in arenas. Long ago, I had my friend park his char for a night in one, with autoattack on, so I could raise my defense and bind wound skills.
It worked perfectly.
