Which race are you going to play Thievism? I'm not too knowledgable on Halas or Rivervale but if you're starting on Faydwer as any kind of elf, gnome or dwarf, the bard mail delivery quest is definitely worth doing to raise some funds.
Go to Tacar Tissleplay in Felwithe and take a note to Jakum Webdancer (the bard guild in Kelethin), and keep running to and fro... each delivery gets you at least 11gp if i remember rightly, and without spells to buy you'll be on the way to affording some armor
