Having watched both, I completely disagree. The first season of the US Office definitely stole almost exclusively from the UK version, but in seasons 2 and 3 it developed into a unique show that was very entertaining. Unfortunately they couldn't sustain that for long.
Actually never watched past first season, but i'm biased towards Ricky Gervais and if he's not in it i ain't watching that shit son
