For one thing the North was becoming more industrial, creating newer industries, and the South was losing money on it's cotton and tobacco plantations. Therefore, the South wanted to start trading outside of the United States, and the United States government wanted to charge large taxes and tariffs on the Southern plantation goods. These two things lead to a difference in agenda, and thus the Southern elites decided to make their own government, the Confederates.
