I would say that yes, random PKing is still sort of frowned upon because whoever you try to kill will probably hold a grudge. Thats why you find a guild.

FFA is not quite what it sounds like. I believe it is more guild vs guild than anything else.
If you roam around FFA attack everyone on site, of course no one will like you.

Find a guild with some pals, friends are always to be had and you get to fight other guilds for a reason.
