Game Mechanics: Sharpening rusty weapons

I've been farming rusty/tarnished weapons in FoB for a little while now, and was planning on sharpening them to gain blacksmithy.

However only about 1/2 of the weapons that are dropped will even combine in a forge with the stone (even if they are the same weapon) . The name and stats of the weapons do not change either after a message that the combination was successful.

I have not gained any smithy skill either, but that could be due to not enough attempts.

Also, weren't there more than 3 weapon types dropped around cab?
