My main has always been male, normally my chief alt too. Lesser alts and trade bots or time wasting toons have been female here and there.

I remember the first female toon. It was in EQ Live, sometime in 1999. My wife created a female barb shaman on my account to try the game. She got hooked and her own account. I was farting around in a newbie zone on the female toon left on my account.

Some male gnome mage of a mid 40s level was killing guards. He was smitten with me and gave me plat and items. It creeped me out on a very core level. I still took the goodies as I could use them, but from then on I made sure folks knew I was crossdressing if I played a female toon.

Heh. One of my longest online friends from EQ 1999 forward... crossdressed and I didn't know it for years. When I found out I just felt like it made sense. They never attempted to hide their true gender. I and many more just assumed. I remember thinking from time to time, "man she's a lot like a guy, must be a tomboy". Hehe! It made perfect sense when it dawned on me. I felt a little silly, but not as silly as the fools that try pickups in an MMO!
