it's true, we are much fatter on average compared to European especially if you go into the boondocks.

We are too dependent on the automobile. We just drive out of parking lot, through the mcdonalds drivethru, to the driveway. Walk like 10 feet to the door. Unless you live in a city where you bike it or actually have public transit and have to walk to the train/bus station your not getting exercise unless you set time aside for it.
