That's not how it works. The money is already spent, raising the debt limit warrants nothing in exchange because it is for spending from previous budgets that were already agreed upon by both parties.

You know that two headed girl? Imagine it decides to buy a helicopter for 12 payments of $10,000 and put the payments on a credit card. Both heads agree on the purchase. 3 months later, they hit their $30,000 credit card limit. Going over the limit will get their helicopter repo'd, embarrass them in front of all the other monsters, and destroy their credit such that they will never be able to buy a house or a car, ruining their life. So they need to raise their credit card limit. However, one of the heads decides that it won't sign off on raising the limit unless the other head agrees to do their chores for a month. It is threatening both their futures, mutual ruin, in exchange for concessions that are unwarranted, unearned, and undeserved.

Republicans are doing the same thing. The time to oppose spending was during the creation of the budget, not later on when you're just trying to make funds available for the money you already committed to spending. The only leverage Republicans have in this situation is the willingness to plunge the country into economic ruin, literally shamelessly gambling our country's prosperity on an act of vanity. Even the brinkmanship itself at this point is starting to cause economic problems, decline in the stock market, etc.

Republicans had no problem cutting taxes on the rich, crippling our government's revenue and ballooning the deficit. They had no problem spending billions upon billions on the military, both under Trump and Biden. But when it comes time to ante up the money they already spent, they're trying to drown the country. I hope Biden mints a $1 trillion coin. Bunch of fucking children.
