Not always. If someone wants to destroy me, there will be no compromise. This is where lines get drawn and where political discussions turn into fights.
To an extent I belive that's a big part of what's wrong with the U.S. today. Increasingly the nation doesn't want to live with itself anymore. It's divided against itself, patience wears thin, and more and more folks are fed up with the other "side." Sometimes I see it linkened to a bad, failing marriage, and the comparison seems not entirely out of place. Can it be fixed? Political extremism won't fix it, and we don't have a serious third option (call it political "marriage counseling") so the long-term outlook appears pessimistic. The gradual hardening of rhetoric over time--from both sides--should be regarded as at least a serious warning sign. Instead it goes unheeded and the process continues.
