Silver was probably taken up as a colloquial after the gold grab in the 1930s. Technically it is used either way. Here is a golden spoon example from 1899 I would use Silver if I was implying, they had a " Paid for " experience, the parents paid tuition and maybe granted them a car for free. Middle class cruise control for cool. Golden could be used more along the lines where the parents built a wing of the school.
