That's just American living. Heck, much of my wife's own family won't even talk to her. Good old Protestant American culture, work 'till you drop, if you can't work you're worthless trash, chuck sick people into the ditch to die, out of sight out of mind.
Strangely, those folks never see themselves that way and always demand sympathy when they get sick. It's only everyone else who's faking everything.
