Epic can definitely be skipped, but you don't even need to get a VP key. While you definitely should for the utility weapons (ensnare spear, lifetap sword, feverblade, etc) a setup like Willsapper + Koi Trident is far better than epics. There's also too many other weapons to list, both one and two handers from Velious. Generally the advantage over VP weapons is stats. Willsapper and Trident stand out for having slow procs and stats. You really can never have too many Willsappers or Tridents on a raid, even an early 35% or 10% slow can save a fight - particularly because Trident slow lands on two of the highest damage raid targets in the game, Vyemm & Tunare.
The best reason to get epic is clout and for using mainhand for the first few procs. Considering it'd be far cheaper to get a better combo, it's not ideal. In terms of value (cost to obtain), Warrior epic is the worst in the game.
