The automotive industry is managing to gradually turn even me against them with their peddling of crap like 5,000 pound Jeeps and Broncos and complete refusal to even try to be sensible. I grew up making fun of those ridiculous 70's land barges, and here we are back to making stuff that's just as heavy and absurd, and that we'll also be making fun of in the not-too-distant future. I think the government's present 10-year policy is going too far the other way--an over-reaction--but something's gotta give because the industry is becoming absurd and seems incapable of self control.

I realized the other day, almost with horror, while looking through a junkyard, that I'd rather drive an '81 Reliant than a '2021 Bronco. More to the point, I'd rather drive that design philosophy with 40 years of refinement rather than what amounts to a modern equivalent of a '77 LTD.

Ya, I haven’t been following it as closely, but I’d never buy a “land barge” (lol good term) just because of the super shit gas mileage they get. My work commute is like 25 miles one-way. And when I go kayaking on the weekends that’s like 60 miles one-way. I just got a new 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD, that’s what I rockin now (only do pickups because I do kayak fairly often, only because my dad absolutely fucking loves kayaking so it’s a way to spend time)

What I discovered when researching into the mid-sizes is that some are moving towards a smaller cylinder engine and turbo’ing them. I heard mixed reports that this may become more and more prevalent due to EPA and stuff. For example, the new Ford Ranger is a 4 cyl twin turbo. I was considering it as a possible purchase but was worried about the longevity of a turbo blower. But from what I heard that also has improved quite a bit over time
