Not to pile on you, but just imagine one of your kids comes out as gay, bi or trans and gets bullied at school to the point where they kill themselves. This happens every day. I have a feeling if it happened to you, you'd feel differently about educating the kiddos about these things.

They should have been educated to stand up for themselves if being bullied.
