I have to vehemently disagree. A majority of people have not experienced real loss. Or they've never had a significant or chronic illness. They have nothing to put things into perspective. And a lot of them are poorly educated (our biggest hurdle). So they trust in their sports team to give them guidance, only to find out when it's too late that was a mistake.

You are right to a certain extent.
What is considered "real loss"? A teenager who's pet rat died? A kid in foster care who is watching their only parent be led away to serve years in prison? Death of a family member? Loss of personal things that most take for granted (ie. amputation, mobility, cognitive capabilities, etc.)? Real loss is very person dependent; just like perspective.
Your poorly educated does strike a cord. In my neck of the woods there's a significant number of people with bachelors degrees and graduate degrees. However simply because a person has one doesn't mean they're well versed in all areas. In some situations it's counterproductive IMO. One of my friends has a masters from Princeton in CS. She's dam smart and a hell of a developer at Microsoft. She also has the opinion that she can read one or two articles on any subject and become an instant expert on that subject in 15 minutes or less; including Covid-19. This is dangerous as hell IMO.
I'm hoping your remark about "following their sports team" was meant as an example. In addition to my friend listed above another person I know does exactly this; follows the Raiders and more or less worships them. Yep, Raiders team takes a knee before the game and they believe that should be law. However expanding on that there are also people that will bow down to whatever deity is being plastered all over the news. It could be Dr. Faucci, Joe Biden, Antifa or even the black panthers. People blindly following whoever is being lifted up today is more dangerous than ignorant people ignoring the news.
