Also as someone who did 13 years of martial arts with the opportunity to train with people like Hanshi Alexander (Hanshi at the time, I think hes Renshei or whatever the rank is after now since he was raised to another degree) Franko Sanguinetti (head of the USA MKKU chapter), Sensei Gakiya and Yogi from the Matayoshi Kobudo Kodokan and another local martial artist who has trained a series of people who competed and had a lot of success in nationals I wont name- you start by learning blocks, yes, but if your teachers arent absolute shit you will learn more useful things as you get more skilled. At a certain point you're not trained to block anymore, you're trained to intercept and counter strike. Blocking a baseball bat once it hits its full momentum is dumb, yes, reaching forward to stop it before they can reach full force and leaving them open for a retaliation however is not. That being said, I'm also a fan of people carrying a gun or pepper spray. Better to not get close enough for martial skills to be what it comes down to.
yeah well i was a dumbass footsoldier i joined the army as a private they didnt care as long as i blocked a bullet or a claymore

or u know just looked cool hanging out at the checkpoint
