What the marketing weasels put out usually bears little resemblance to what the engineers say. Probably has improved since I was in the games industry, but back then we all had problems with clueless marketing weasels who had zero experience or background in games.

Classic era generally had over 1k per server by the months leading up to Kunark. Someone posted some evidence in another thread, I could try to find it
