Player lighting definitely has a framerate hit, but there's something funny going on beyond just that. If the lighting is affected by the large number of surfaces in forest areas (and especially by the motion of Kunark trees) that could affect it.

It's odd you said this. I was experimenting in WC by looking at the desert part, where there was no lag, and then when I turn around where the trees and buildings are, it lags.
