Ya it's not about happiness to me. It's a about survival. And betterment. That requires a great deal of suffering. Which requires energy. Which requires enduring side effects.

Lithium wasn't doing anything but making it impossible to get out of bed.

I don't know about the "cure". The premise is sound. Always seeking happiness leads to suffering.
