It's funny. I think I got my epic on live at some point during the end of velious. At that point I just strolled into Neriak and Cabalis and found both mobs up.

So in terms of how the game was on live back when epic 1.0s were still relevant I really think it was one of the easier ones... I frankly remember worrying much more about getting the head from the prince in Chardok and the drop from PoHate because those were raid targets. Verina and Vessel were bumps on the road that could be duo'd or 1-grouped at worst.

I think that's because the progression (an expansion per year) meant there just weren't THAT many encs. People weren't playing more than their one main character mostly and didn't have several 60s at that point because there was always the next expansion's bottleneck key quest to do (ST, VT and so on) to worry about and sink your time into on your one main character.

Here everyone eventually figures out that the ENC is just very overpowered and a lot of fun AND cheap to gear out comparatively speaking. And we have infinite time to play with and no more expansions coming out. And so the two bumps on the road become huge stumbling blocks due to their incredibly long windows and a somewhat steady (if inevitably decreasing) flow of competition.
