EQ is not user friendly, and yeah.. more like 99.9% of your exp will come from grinding, solo or groups. The focus of EQ quests is items, not exp. Yeah no quest log, but there is a /note function which you can write it and it saves your notes. And finally, yes research = win in EQ. If there is one thing I can tell you about EQ is DO YOUR RESEARCH. There is NOTHING worse then going through all the time and effort of a long, progressive quest only to realize that the item that you want wasn't added until an expansion that came out 5 years later. You also have to keep in mind that sites like allakhazam have been updated for current (live) EQ. So some of those items have been nerfed, or have yet to be nerfed on this server. When in doubt ask people in game - and if they're unfriendly then keep posting here and I'll help you out =D.
