Quick note about the multi-category search: I was confused by the media wiki versioning scheme (eg. 1.28.0, not 1.2.8.0), and so it turns out that multi-category search extension is supported by our version. Not sure if whoever administers the wiki's machine wants to deal with adding an extension, but at least in theory it's possible.
