They didn't afford a Letsjoe a Tolan's to go with his Earthcaller? Seems DEX is your main concern, because again Shovel is legit as fuck. Grissle was a character he took gear on I almost never saw that wasn't essential for raiding. It's nice that worked out for him to some degree.

Damage delay on those other weapons will still have SoD maintaining better agro. Prior to and after a proc the SoD will easily make up the difference with raw physical damage.
