Technically, but I don't think that's what he's looking for. I would suggest druid. Easy to get around and explore, can group or solo many different ways. It's a great way to experience classic EQ.

His goal is to zoom to 55+ as quickly as possible so he can group with his buddies who already play on the server and are level 60. I wouldn't suggest leveling up a druid would be great advice for someone who wants to get into the higher end grouping game

So actually I think bard is much more what he's looking for. Very fast path to 60, no gear needed other than maybe a couple of cheapo instruments and a suit of banded, and a very viable group/raid member that stacks with anything (even another bard) at 60.
