He sent in commandos to rescue Mussolini which shows he hardly wanted to invade or conquer Italy. He made 9 different attempts at peace with the UK. He had treaties with Japan and the Ottomans. He had only broke the pact with the Soviets because Stalin was mobilizing a million men along the eastern border.
The whole Roman empire thing is esoteric and historic but hardly proves he wanted to rule the world.
Goebbels did a great job of destroying the propaganda coming from the UK and the Soviets. The film industry was still pretty new and people were only then figuring out the power of that medium.
You should listen to some of Hitler or Goebbels speeches. They are pretty prophetic.

Italy was an ally and so was Japan. Germany went into Russia not because of troops but for the oil because Germany has none. Same reason Japan took the Philippines and SE Asia. Germany didn't, doesn't have enough resources to sustain a long term war which was the initial reason for having an alliance with Russia, cheap oil.
