There's no kind of trading (but it's supposed to be coming), no. But the game has plenty of incentive to play with friends. Sharing lures, sharing nest locations, it's more fun to chat with someone while trying to throw balls all the way out to that zubat, etc. Taking and holding gyms works much better with a group than solo. I haven't done anything with them really cause the balance is so fucked but I think you CAN attack a gym as a team. And then once you take it down it's a lot easier to level it back up with a group of people training at it. And then you can only hope to keep the gym if you have pals to drop snorlaxes at it with you.
It doesn't lack much polish or depth compared to anything else that's been released in the last decade (except for remakes of older games)... for what that's worth. Level up, explore, collect, optimize your crew of pokemon, battle for gyms. That's 3/4 of what any MMO has to offer, albeit in a smaller package cause of mobile... but pokemon gets you out and about and probably will only get better over the next 12 months.
I had never touched anything pokemon until release day when I tried pokemon go. Took me a few tries over the first week to actually stick with it, but it's pretty fun overall. If they get the servers fixed, get tracking straightened away, do a balance pass on combat, it'd be great. And then if they actually add trading, duels, and battling wild pokemon too? It'd be pretty amazing then.
