It's a 2 stroke, but different than a normal 2 stroke. The piston and reed technology make it so you don't have to rebuild and re-bore after every season. In fact I'v had my kdx for about 9 years and I haven't bored it yet. Still has very strong compression. It's about the best value bike you can get for the money.
