Does it matter what weapons you have when French people are using them? When was the last time France won a military encounter with . . . anyone?
- France was kicked out of Cambodia by the Viet Cong (Dien Bien Phu being the crowning disaster).
- France was conquered by the Germans in WW II in a mere month after years preparing for war by building the Maginot Line.
- France kind of didn't lose vs Germany in WW I, but Britain (naval blockade) and the US (additional ground troops that countered Germany's new tactics in 1917) actually did the heavy lifting.
- France was soundly beaten by Prussia in 1870, losing two provinces
- France fought Austria to a draw in 1859 (the battle was such a disaster for both sides that it led to the creation of the Red Cross)
- Napoleon was a superb general and won many battles, yet in the end France was utterly conquered by the British/Prussian alliance at Waterloo.
- Louis XIV didn't exactly win the War of Spanish Succession; his grandson was forced to forfeit his claim to the crown of France and he was beaten by Marlborough at Blenheim among others.
- France was partially conquered by the English for most of the Middle Ages, with famous victories at Crecy and Agincourt.
I guess you have to go back to William the Conquerer and the invasion of England (1050 AD) and Charles Martel halting the Moors at Poitiers (750 AD) for real French military success.
