Basically the way the game works is that there are three warring realms that each have their own slew of classes. There's a set of "skills" that are distributed evenly among the classes in each realm. The "generic" way to look at it is that Midgard (Nordic) is the melee realm, Hibernia (Irish) is the magic realm, and Albion is the stealth/defensive/well-rounded realm. The class design is really nice in DAOC. For example, the "healer" class of Albion is the Cleric and gets healing/buff/nuke lines. For Hibernia it's the Druid with healing/buff/pet lines. Midgard has the Healer with healing/buff/cc lines. So the realms all sort of have "base" classes but with different specialization lines to make them unique. So it might take some time to get to 50 and obtain your BIS set, but it's worth it for the RvR, since DAOC is essentially the best pvp mmo. I have a Skald on Uthgard but I ended up quitting since the two American guilds I was in fell apart. Midgard is hella Germans with a lot of other Europeans mixed in, Americans are sort of hard to find so it's hard to succeed when you play during off-hours.
