It's based on the Norse sagas, their poetry, as well as other written accounts. Loosely based. Many of the characters were real, such as Bjorn Ironside and his family, among others portrayed in the show; including sagas of Ragnar, though debated among some academics. Including Ivar the boneless as well, one of the most brutal Vikings, historically, and the son of Ragnar. Ragnars brother Rollo (Ganger-Hrólf), well.. wasn't his brother, though did marry in Paris after a later siege and became first ruler of what became to be known as Normandy.

Historically accurate it's not, but historically authentic it is. Most historical movies/shows are often far from authentic. This is one of the reasons you see this series mentioned on most geek entertainment sites (most geeks like history), while nerd sites wait for the comic book [You must be logged in to view images. But the writers here do inject some creative writing into the show, such as pulling accounts from varying historical events. Such as Ragnar was never at the raid on Lindisfarne (though did authentically happen), but he was likely at Paris. But if he were in the Paris raid, he was never baptized there, though that did happen I believe near Rome, and not Ragnar but with another named Hastings who was with Bjorn, and infiltrated a Roman city after being declared dead and entered the city inside a coffin. Spoiler alert: Ragnar won't die in Paris.
