Game Mechanics: Drakkel Dire Wolf Max Hit Strangeness

So I (and my friend Speedi!) spent some time playing around with the Drakkel Dire Wolves today. They really tear things up. However, when I went back to try to estimate a formula for max hit -> level I noticed something strange:

When charm broke (yes, peanut gallery, I died) it hit me for a max of 244. But it only hit the giants for a max of 243. Do the giants have some sort of 1 point mitigation?
