This releases natural narcotics (endorphins). It is considered an addiction by medical definition by any doctor who has read the literature.

Don't have the study off hand. They took 2 groups, one tanned for 8 weeks, the other did nothing.

They gave both groups naltrexone after the 8 weeks and monitored them closely for signs of endorphin withdrawal, and sure enough naltrexone instituted opioid withdrawal syndrome in only the tanning group.

Just thought it was funny you mentioned an actual activity that is proven by science to have the potential for addiction.
