I think people have a higher tendency to lean extremist the worse their countries economic/political situation. There are parts of both the Quran and the bible that have pretty radical language, but the poor state of things in the middle east means people are more willing to agree with those radical things.
Look at Paris for instance, 160 dead and people calling for the extermination of all Muslims. But the US and allies have been meddling in the middle east for 70 years. Essentially we've kicked the hornets nest for 7 decades, then Europe said "hey let's let the hornets in... they need a home. "

The US and it's allies have been in conflict with Middle Eastern and Muslim nations for a lot longer than 70 years. Our allies were fighting with them long before we were even a nation, and look at some of the first military engagements our congress authorized. Calls for Jihad against western nations are absolutely nothing new, they not a product of the modern era or the product of some kind of recent development in extremism.
