Getting Lambent Armor Solo?

HMM...I might do this one day if I get my bard high enough. I can do it on my druid but only with animals. The principles are the same whichever class is doing it but the mechanics are slightly different.

Are there something about the mechanics that make it less useful than enchanter charming? It seems like it would be a great way for a bard to add dps to any group they are in but you don't see it mentioned nearly as often.
