I don't get why people think Socialism is such a dirty word though... but that's a whole other topic that most can't comprehend speaking about truthfully, or have any right speaking on it's behalf.

We are finally having a significant number (though not a majority) of voters who didn't grow up under the red scare. To most Americans Socialist=Communist and Commies are bad.
The key though will be to educate the public in a balanced manner, the senate leader of the democrats on live TV failed to even define the difference between a democrat and a socialist. This is because much like the Tea Party of the repubs, the democrats are creating their own 'radical progressive' movement even though its not publicly split. The issue with these radicals is that if they have their way a classical socialist like Sanders will be nothing compared to the full on Marxists who follow Hillary.
The political spectrum goes well beyond simple left and right, even up and down (authoritarian/libertarian) is still extremely simplified. Hell, I guarantee 95% of Americans if asked what a libertarian is would answer right-wing or republican.
