The point I was making was that macroevolution has been observed in a laboratory setting. That those experiments produced efficient/beneficial change aren't even part of the same argument.

Whenever you have a bunch of laymen arguing about the validity of evolution, it almost invariably involves the failure of one side to grasp the scale of time that evolution actually occurs in. It's just like Louis CK jokes; people that argue against evolution usually sound really stupid: "My daddy ain't a monkey!" "When has a species ever turned into another species?!"
But given that most of the time these people are creationists - people who don't know anything - it always comes as no surprise when this tired line repeatedly gets taken up.
