It isn't necessarily black and white. Some people like using the words because the words are the last bastion of swearing. They are a taboo and people are attracted to them for that very reason. Just like when we all start exchanging "crap" and "pee" with "shit" and "piss", it was edgy. Now all we do it drop: shit, fuck, dick, cock, cunt, ass, pussy, cocksucker, motherfucker, asshole, etc all day long. We have a craving for the profane. Using hate speech in certain situations now a days doesn't make you a racist anymore than talking in ebonics makes you from the inner city

Even using the word retard is now beginning to see backlash that has been normally withheld for racial and homophobic slurs. There are tons of videos and articles online now about "The R word". Although it would seem autistic has replaced the word retard over the last year or two.

Where do you draw the line? Is retard better or worse than faggot? Both of them are used in similar ways and they both have a massive negative connotation to the groups they "represent".
