Teams servers were hard coded by race or alignment. For example Sullon Zek had a Good, Neutral, and Evil team that divided certain races and classes between the team.
You could not hit other members of your team even with AOE spells which added an extra dynamic to pvp and coordination.
Sadly it still didn't stop zerging mainly because they never capped teams, but it definitely helped. But they should have made a team off limits after too many people choose that team.
