Shaman pet question

Excuse my newbness, but is the Shaman pet (specifically Vigilant Spirit) able to equip gear? Namely weapons.

My assumption was always yes, but since they show now weapon animations I've never been able to verify it. I've asked around in game, but no one has ever been 100% sure one way or another. Any info would be great! Thanks very much!
