Going to make the assumption that no one else here has been personally subjected to religious extremism. It's one thing to watch/read about something and get angry, but it's an entirely different beast altogether having to experience it firsthand.

And individuals will sometimes "sacrifice something of great value, especially life itself, for the sake of principle" and unfortunately that's what occurred recently in France -- the principle being that of expression. For every rigid and impersonal system in place there are ways of subterfuge, including satire, to rehumanize the population as a whole and no one group excluded. It just takes time is all.
