Yes that happens.

Train your puller to space himself a little from the rest of the group so you can drop an aoe mezz OR get good at using single target mezz. In fact, get a clicky (insidious rod) and toggle targets quickly using a combo of single target mezz and root. This allows you to fast-cast between targets. Train DPS to show some restraint and hold off hitting things or running into the fray until you got things locked down.

Becomes moot at 55 when group + yourself are immune to l16 aoe mezz.

Also, if charming, try to stay away from the rest of your group so that when you pop aoe stun you're not hitting anyone else. If you have a competent in range group member with PE, have them perma root your pet in place and have tank pull enemies in range of your pet. Adds an extra layer of safety to charming for yourself at minimum costs.
