Mage pet question

Is the 49 earth pet better than the 51 earth pet? Was duoing in the hole earlier today at 50 and everything was going great. Got 51 loaded up my new pet and it felt like my new pet was doing less damage and was taking more damage. The 49 pet I summoned was hitting for 54 and the 51 pet I summoned was hitting for 54. The 49 pet did have the shovel focus but I was under the impression that all the shovel did was increase the pets hp.
