Necro pets were the best in classic, especially at the high end. Mage pets maybe did more dps with sword of runes procs, but the 49 necro pet was a sick tank.

If this were the case, Necros would be far superior to Mages - as their nonpet spells are obviously far superior. (Because let's face it, 2nd best DDs in the game are nothing compared to the vast array of DoTs and Fear that necros get) I don't remember this being the case in classic, though I may be mistaken. IIRC, Mages got hosed big time post-Kunark.
Also, I wasn't really talking about tanking, since at 50 your pet won't be tanking unless you are solo or duo farming... and at that point I think I like the fire pet much more than necro's pets, for indoor areas at least.
